Playdough as a party theme is-in my opinion- one of those fun ideas that you can do for different occasions. Who wouldn’t love a play doh party?

This is honestly the best party theme for toddlers. Not only is it a guaranteed hit (because everyone loves to play with play doh), but with so many party ideas, this is the perfect way to celebrate!

Why Make Playdough a Party Theme?

Different ways you can incorporate playdough into a party theme is almost any time there is a celebration!

  • Kids valentines
  • Next Birthday party
  • Virtual playdates

I love the idea of adding in a creative element like play doh into kids parties for kids of all ages. I think it is just a fun way to have a great afternoon.

Homemade play dough

Making your own playdough is one of my favorite parenting secret weapons. Not only does it help them develop their fine motor skills, but it helps them practice independent play.

When hosting a group of young children, what is better than making some playdough and letting them sit and create for a few hours? Not much.

If you want to really keep them calm at the party, try making some lavender scented play doh with the recipe from my friends at dessert naturals!

Once the play doh is made, then it is time to let the kids’ imagination fly! Ready to learn more about what supplies are needed for the ultimate craft table? Keep scrolling…

Supplies for the ultimate craft table

Once that playdough is made, it is time to create! Make sure your guests have plenty of opportunity to make with a large table filled with supplies like:

  • Kid sized aprons
  • Cookie cutters
  • Plastic Cups (to make the perfect circle)
  • Silicone cupcake liners
  • Popsickle sticks
  • Googly eyes

Setting out a station like this will help the kids create whatever they want. If you want to go crazy, set up a competition with different themes like ‘unicorn horn’ or ‘scary monster’ and see what the kids design.

Activities for your Play doh Party

With younger kids especially, there might be a lull in the party fun, which is when it is great to have some activities in your back pocket.

  1. Make Forky from Toy Story 4
  2. Pretend you are having a bake off and have the kids decorate play doh cakes.
  3. Use fun Play Doh Mats to create entire stories (here are some free ones!)
  4. Superworm Activity

Once you have the activities all planned, it is time to create a space that will help take the theme to the next level!

Party Decorations

Another reason I love having a play doh party for any celebration is that it is so easy to decorate for! There are so many party decorations for this party that are budget friendly and keep the party theme going.

At the dollar store, pick up a few decorations in primary colors (since those are playdoh’s colors). A few items to grab would be balloons, table covers and streamers.

Then, add in a few rainbow details like a balloon arch (here’s a super easy kit that took less than 2 hours to build with just me and my husband!)

Party Favors

Everyone loves to receive some loot bags after the party is all said and done, so why not keep the theme going with physical items that they can play with at home?

From letting them take home their homemade playdough to packing in some fun ways for them to continue creating at home, it’s a fun option for families after the party is over.

If packing up the homemade play doh from the party is too much, you can always give away a few cans of play doh to each kid.
