Not only are there countless developmental reasons, but these activities are almost guaranteed to break everyone out into giggles. They are seriously that fun!

I love these activities for my toddlers and I am sure that you will, too.

Benefits of Movement Activities for Preschoolers

List of benefits for movement activities for preschoolers

Moving games are a fun way to encourage young children to move and improve their physical development.

  1. Develop gross motor skills like jumping or running
  2. Teach different social skills through games by working as a team and how to safely move
  3. In early childhood, children learn best by play- especially through movement.
  4. Movement is an excellent way for your toddler to learn about emotional expression

Examples of activity ideas that incorporate movement

There are so many different ways to incorporate movement into your toddlers day.

  • Toss bean bags into an object like a bucket
  •  Paint paper plates of different colors. Once they dry, have them jump from one color to the other. (this helps with spatial awareness)
  • Run to a space like different animals. Call out ‘frog’ and watch them hop- you won’t regret it.
  • Play Simon Says
  • Take painters tape and make a line on the ground. Challenge the kids to walk in a straight line
  • Try movement cards! Pull one out of the deck one at a time and have your kids do that movement. Watch them wiggle their nose, jump on one foot, sit silly- anything!

Benefits of Musical Activities for Preschoolers

List of Musical Activities for Preschoolers

The importance of music in your child’s life cannot be underestimated. It is a vital tool that can be used to help your child develop in several areas.

  1. Great way to introduce different sounds
  2. Music can develop language skills by introducing new words. A great example of this is the song ‘head shoulders knees and toes’ and how it teaches the names of body parts.
  3. One Study done by Berkely actually found that classical music such as Mozart can actually help children’s brain synapses connect rapidly, making their brains work more efficiently.

Examples of Musical Games for Preschoolers

Music activities are a great idea to introduce sound and help develop the benefits mentioned above.

Picture of Blue Tamborine and four egg shakers. These are the perfect musical activities for toddlers

  • Shaking egg shaker to the beat of their favorite song during circle time
  • Let the kids choose their own musical instruments then have them collectively make a beat. The different sounds will make their own, unique song!
  • Pull out a CD player and play preschool music during play time as background music.
  • One fun song that I love to play with kids is ‘down by the bay’
  • Music lessons. If your child is beginning to express an interest in learning a musical instrument, you can help develop that passion with classes.

Combine them! Music and movement activities for preschoolers

In a preschool classroom, you will often find activities that will combine music and movement to help develop those important skills mentioned earlier. They are such valuable tools when helping young children grow!

Here are a few ways that preschool teachers incorporate both music and movement into their day that you can try…

  • Musical Chairs
  • Play movement songs! Music like ‘head shoulders knees and toes’ or ‘Run Baby Run’ by Casper Babypants.
  • Action songs are another great tool. These songs encourage your child to use fine motor skills like like  putting your left hand in during the hokey pokey

green and blue scarf waving in the air. Blue sky is the background for a fun music and movement activity for preschoolers.

  • Try scarf dancing with silk scarves. Play their favorite songs or nursery rhymes and have them keep the scarf moving while the music plays.
  • Body Part Dancing (The can only dance with the body part mentioned)
  • Put on a Talent Show
  • Musical painting. Set out the painting materials and play some music. Encourage the children to listen then paint what it is that they hear
  • Make your own instruments! Paper plate tambourines or drums from a cup and balloon are a fun way to move then make music.
  • Act out a nursery rhyme. Have your kids listen and learn a nursery rhyme. Then, encourage them to act out what happens in the song in a fun dance. 10
  • Play follow the leader! This helps develop imitation skills so that your child can follow others in other tasks.
  • Let kids play musical instruments differently. What does it sound like when you play the recorder upside down or standing on one foot?
  • Make a thunderstorm. Give the kids different instruments (egg shakers, drums, rhythm sticks, etc) and use hand signals to show when a thunderstorm is coming and going. They get to practice creating loud and soft noises and it’s a blast.
  • Host a dance-off. Play your favorite silly music and have each kid make up a dance. One by One, have your kids copy one childs dance move until everyone has gone.
  • Have a musical parade! Give all of your kids a musical instrument and have them make a parade around the block.
