Hand washing-especially among young children- has become more valuable than ever these past few years. Making sure you are equipping your child with the proper tools to wash their hands is extremely important.

There are plenty of steps for little minds to remember, so why not help your kids wash their hands successfully with the right tools?

infographic explaining how toddlers should wash their hands

To help them wash their hands, remind them of these 4 things:

  1. Get your hands wet before adding soap
  2. When applying the soap, make sure it is rubbed between their fingers as well as the back of their hands
  3. When rinsing off the soap, make sure they keep their hands underneath the water long enough to fully rinse off the soap
  4. This entire process should take around 20 seconds- or singing happy birthday 2 times

The Benefits to a Child Sink

When it comes to having your child live a clean and safe life, hand washing should be at the top of the list of skills for them to know. In order to set that foundation of intuitively washing their hands, have your little ones wash in a place that is comfortable for them.

For most toddlers, having a sink that is smaller is best.

Not only will it be much easier for them to reach the soap, water and faucet, but they will feel more comfortable. When children feel more comfortable, that is when they begin to feel more confident.

With toddlers, confidence leads to independence, which is the ultimate goal.

What to look for in a handwashing sink for young children

When your child begins to be big enough to wash their own hands, there are so many things to consider!

1) What is the material made out of? Stainless steel sinks are easier to clean, but a white sink is more cost effective.

2) What is the water heater tank set to? You do not want your toddler to accidentally burn their hands by simply using a hot water tap. If you don’t want to change the temperature of your water heater, consider using a child proof sink faucet lock.

3) Where is the electrical outlet located? If it is too close, there is a chance of your child getting electricuted.

4) When you are looking at the kitchen sink, make sure to look at how deep the sink basin is and if a cabinet door can be opened by anyone.

How to make a bathroom child-friendly for hand washing

To make a bathroom sink child friendly for lots of hand washing get a few things like:

  • Step stool (depending on the child’s height )
  • Liquid soap dispenser
  • Faucet extender so the water is easy to touch
  • Door Knob Covers
  • Add a fun bathroom theme like dinosaurs or mermaids
  • If you are remodeling and chose to get a sink specifically for children, I always recommend to my mom friends with toddlers that they should check out Delta Children for a high quality toddler sink.

Best Portable Sinks for Outdoor Use

With a young child, it is almost a guarantee that they will somehow get really messy.

With my kids, I love to have a portable sink in the back of my car for outdoor use. To me, it’s one of the best ways to ensure that my toddler is clean after a trip to the park or a day at the beach.

Most will only have a cold water tap, so depending on the time of the year, you might not be able to use it.

For camping or a long day, I love this portable sink! It is easy to compact and I love how easy it is for my kids to use.

Kids Sink for Play

Play is something that I am extremely passionate about with toddlers. In fact, play should be happening for a large part of their day.

Of course, with toddlers if you can turn something as simple as hand washing into something fun, then you should! That’s why I love, love LOVE this play sink.

All 4 of my kids had the time of their lives with this sink in the summertime and would spend hours practicing washing their hands. Add in some play dishes and they can practice doing the dishes as well. (That way, by the time that they are older they will have the foundation to do that for you- woo-hoo!)

If you’ve been around here awhile, you know how much I love independent play! You can even read my guide here.

In Summary

A child sink is an excellent tool for parents to encourage cleanliness with their kids. Not only will it help them stay clean, but it will help your home stay healthy.

There are so many benefits to adding a sink in your home that your child is able to use independently.
